The Future Starts Here

When I became interested in games, John Carmack was among those I looked up to.

A few days ago, John Carmack posted this DM conversation on his . Questioned whether coding will become obsolete in the future due to AI/ChatGPT, he replied:

If you build full “product skills” and use the best tools for the job, which today might be hand coding, but later may be Al guiding, you will probably be fine.

And when asked about the nature of these full product skills:

Software is just a tool to help accomplish something for people—many programmers never understood that. Keep your eyes on the delivered value, and don’t over focus on the specifics of the tools.

I think that’s both great advice for the future and has always been great advice in the past. I remember well how I looked up to John Carmack’s work in awe, many years ago, when I began to become interested in games.
