✅ Excellent direction, cinematography, acting, script, but not every dialogue line hits the mark.
✅ Some reviews call it a historical vignette, and indeed: brief, taut, coiled, and wired to unravel in the mind.
✅ Highly effective: Duruflé’s BWV147 organ arrangement for personal and Messiaen’s Livre du Saint-Sacrement XVI for cultural grief.
As a teenager, I too loved reading Thomas Mann but found Germany wanting overall.
(Another black-&-white movie that, sadly, wasn’t shot on one of Arri’s native monochrome cameras—is it because they’re only available as rentals?)
