Fantastic “The New Vision: Monet and the Contemporary Gaze“ exhibition that features the largest Monet collection in Asia, paired with motif-matching works and installations from contemporary artists like Omori Hinako, Su-Mei Tse, Thảo Nguyên Phan, Nakaya Fujiko, Wolfgang Tillmanns, and many others.
And while you’re there, there’s also the Cezanne collection “Cezanne Legend” that pairs his works with works by Renoir, van Gogh, Gaugin, Braque, Matisse, Bonnard, and Picasso. (The museum has a good explanation why it returns to the original Provençal spelling of Cezanne’s name, which I appreciate and follow from now on too.)
And the museum building, created by Nikken Sekkei and integrated into the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, is also terrific in itself, complete with a “Pola Museum of Art Nature Trail.”
But beware, it’s not easy to get there—I went to Hakone early in the morning with a friend who had to attend to some business, and from there it took me a full hour with two different rural bus lines to get to the museum. (Of course, you can go the entire way by car, but you get an idea how far out it is.) Luckily, my friend picked me up at the museum in the afternoon, right before the typhoon came back from its lunch break!
But yeah, it’s gorgeous, and absolutely worth the trip.
